| The very first elementary school in east Maple Ridge opened in 1885 in Whonnock on the shore of the Fraser River. It served both Ruskin and Whonnock and even a few students living across the river. |
Ruskin opened its own school in 1897. |
|
In 1908 Whonnock Elementary moved from the shore of the river to northwest corner of 272nd Street and 100th Avenue. |
In 1998 the school communities of Ruskin and Whonnock merged in the present school building on 112th Avenue under the name “Whonnock Elementary” |
There are several students at Whonnock Elementary today whose parents, and even grandparents, also attended school at Whonnock or Ruskin. |
