ARMES HOUSE

Whonnock's oldest residence at 10016-272 Street is no more. It was demolished in the fall of 2006.

The exact origin of this house is something of a mystery. There appears to have been a house on the property by the turn of the century.

James Armes acquired the property in 1910 and the original house was either rebuilt or substantially enlarged. The house survived almost unchanged until the present.

In front of the house is a large Monkey Puzzle Tree planted there around 1910 when the Armes family moved in. The photos to the right show the house and the tree in the 1990s (top) and in the 1910s. Good eyes will spot the Monkey Puzzle Tree as a seedling
